  1. Why is freedom of the press important in a democracy?
  • The very definition of democracy involves people having the right to vote for their governing officials and having the right to the freedom of speech. Press plays a detrimental part in allowing information to be shared and evaluated. If the press does not have the freedom it deserves/needs then it will consequently be more biased and illegitimate which would not support the core values of a democratic society.

2. Why are libel laws and censorship considered threats to our civil liberties?

  • Liberal laws usually involve the principles of a limited government and individual rights, which may hinder the ability of our government and ourselves to have the necessary requirements to achieve a fair nation in where freedom thrives. Censorship plays as similar part as a threat for our civil liberties for it will impose limitations for different information sources like the media to share unbiased truth about news.

3. Why is the principle of self-regulation necessary in media?

  • Self-regulation usually involves controlling ones behavior, morals, emotions, and thoughts. If media does not have the principle of self-regulation then media will not have self-imposed boundaries that if crossed may lead to unintended/intended violation of certain laws and basic principles of democracy that entitles everyone with the right to remain silent.
